So You’re Giving a “DEI Talk”: 5 Critical Steps to Maximize Your Impact

by

Congratulations! You’ve been asked to give a DEI Talk!

Now what….?

In the last 24 months, I have delivered over 60 lectures(!) on health equity, diversity, and/or inclusion outside of my own department. Although there was some overlap in the subject matter presented, each experience was unique in its own right.

The number of requests for educational talks in this complex domain is increasing, which is a sign of the evolution of our industry demand. In return, we must improve our skills in providing effective education that leaves a productive impact and a clear path forward.

As the saying goes: “A leader with no followers is simply a person taking a walk.” There is an art to engaging peers and partners so that they follow your vision for a more inclusive and equitable healthcare environment. Further, if you have completed the ODLC Strategic Diversity Leadership Certificate experience, you know that expertise in this area is attainable and necessary.

So….you’re giving “The Talk.”

What can you do to set yourself up for success?

Which step resonates with you the most?

My personal favorite is Step 3: Our ODLC 10-20-30-40% Rule™.

Talks that deviate significantly from these ratios (ex, spending >70% on the WHAT of DEI with little time for relevance, solutions, or Q&A) are at risk of provoking audience disengagement.

Let’s avoid common traps, prepare ourselves with these 5 Steps as a starting point, and take our impact to the next level!
